Ways to help your child prepare for first grade-July 2013

Ways to help your child prepare for first grade

Building reading and writing skills
-Read stories aloud. Have your child read just-right books aloud to you. Use RAZ-Kids. Ask questions such as "Who are the characters in the story?" "What happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story?"
-Practice the Kindergarten word wall words. Most are not phonetically spelled. Your child should be able to automatically spell all of these words.
Mastering math skills
-Count objects using one-to-one correspondence.
-Find patterns around your house.
Assuming responsibility and routines
-Prepare a quiet, organized work area for homework and reading
-Complete daily household chore
-Gain independence by having routines so your child knows what is expected of them next. Independently get ready in the morning.
-Practice putting folder and lunchbox into backpack, tying shoes, zipping up jacket, putting away own supplies and toys
