Wednesday 1/29

For writing today, the kids worked with an editing buddy.  Ask your child how they used this chart.

During Science, the kids researched about millipedes.  Ask them something they learned!  For the next few days, they will add facts and photos into their living/nonliving book on Book Creator

Thanks to our first mystery reader- Sandra, Genesis' Mom.  If you would like to be a mystery reader, sign up here!  If another time is better for you, just send me an email.  Have a nice day!

Millipedes

After using Padlet in our classroom yesterday, I created this Tagxedo of what the kids THINK they know about millipedes.  I look forward to seeing how this changes as they study about this living organism!

Thursday 1/23

We are so excited to join the Global Community iBook Project!  Watch this video and find out what we are going to do.  Do some research at home and see if you can find out any information about Arlington.  Some questions the kids had- How many libraries are there? schools? firehouses?  How many people live in Arlington?  Post what you learned here on Lino!

I spent the morning giving reading assessments and the kids were fantastic for the sub.  I am super impressed with their reading progress!! :)  Ask your child if they have a new reading level.  Send me an email if they aren't sure.

You should now be able to log onto Kidblog and leave comments without logging in.... Let me know if you have any trouble!

Our Read Aloud today was The Silly Snow Day!  Ask your child what was RIDICULOUS!?

Tuesday & Wednesday

We are so excited to be in a blogging community!  The kids are thrilled to be learning and sharing with kids from all over North America :)
Welcome to our blogging friends in Washington, Texas & Montreal!!
This week we are posting comments on each other's class blogs.  Soon the kids will be reading each other's blogs and commenting!

Today the kids put on their editing eyes and fixed some of their stories.  They were in charge of putting capital letters at the beginning of sentences, peoples names and whenever I is alone. They also were checking for punctuation.  It's pretty tricky to go back and make changes on the iPad but the kids really gave it their best effort!!

Finding mistakes in my story. How many mistakes can you find?  Hold up that number.
We found 5!

The kids love to bring things in to share.  We made of list of why things are special enough to share.
Stop by to see our dreams!

MLK

Each week, Brain Pop Jr. has a free movie of the week.  We watched the one on Martin Luther King, Jr.  This week it's for free!  Check it out at home:

I hope everyone enjoyed an extra day together!  Although it was a bit lonely at school without the kiddos, I feel organized and ready to see them this morning :)

Stop by to see our new hopes/dreams bulletin board!

Friday 1/17

We had a busy day!
We started our morning with a school wide assembly. The fourth graders shared about their immigration projects.
For Readers' Workshop, the kids read for 35 minutes!!! :)
Friday Fun was definitely fun- Creation Station, K' nex and imaginary play were some of the busy areas.
The kids learned something tricky during math- addition story problems with 3 addends.  The kids solved a story problem and they shared out all of the different strategies they used- counting all, counting on, tally marks and using known combinations.

Ask your child to show you how they would solve this story problem.
I have 6 red fish, 3 blue fish, and 4 orange fish.  How many fish are there altogether?

Our Read Aloud today- The kids loved hearing so many sweet things about Uncle M.L.
Each child wrote a hope or dream they have.  What big hearts these first graders have!!

Our day ended with our fifth grade buddies!

Enjoy the long weekend :)  See you all on Tuesday.

Thursday 1/16

The rest of our organisms arrived :)
Millipedes, pill bugs, tree seedling and moss
Ask your child how we made our terrarium.

We had a wonderful class discussion about the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I read aloud Martin's Big Words. We also watched the Brain Pop videos on MLK and Rosa Parks.

In Open Circle we talked about teasing and recognizing our differences.  The kids are working on a class book.

Dear Family:
Dealing with teasing was the topic of a recent Open Circle lesson. We talked about how it feels to be teased and how to help someone who is being teased. If you do not like to be teased, one way to try to stop a classmate from teasing is to use words to tell the person to stop. Students were reminded that mean teasing and bullying are “Double D” behaviors and are not acceptable. Students were encouraged not to tease others if they can see that the person being teased does not like it.
At home, talk to your child about being teased and teasing others. Share with your child a time you were teased and it was okay. Share a time you did not like being teased. Discuss some ways your child can help people who are being teased. Encourage your child to be sensitive to the feelings of other children.
In a recent Open Circle, we learned that there are both inside and outside differences in people. We can see outside differences, such as hair color or height. But we cannot tell just by looking at someone what their interests, skills, feelings, and talents are. To find out what a person is really like, you have to get to know him/her.
At home, have a conversation with your child about the differences in people that we can see and cannot see by just looking at them. What are some things that people wouldn’t know about you by merely looking at you? Talk about some ways your child can get to know other people in school.

Literature Connections
Here are some books that relate to the topics we discussed in Open Circle.
Havill, Juanita. Jamaica and Brianna. Houghton Mifflin, 1993.
Best friends learn that teasing one another is hurtful.
Henkes, Kevin. Chester’s Way. Greenwillow Books, 1988.
Chester and Wilson gradually accept Lilly as a new friend, even though she has so many different ideas and interests.
Keller, Holly. Farfallina and Marcel. Greenwillow Books, 2002.
A caterpillar and a gosling become friends despite their physical differences.

Ross, Tom. Eggbert, the Slightly Cracked Egg. Putnam Juvenile, 1997.
Eggbert discovers that he is not the only one with an imperfection and that it is OK to be “slightly cracked.”
Wells, Rosemary. Timothy Goes to School. Viking Children’s Books, 2000.
Timothy meets all kinds of children when he goes to school. Claude, for example,
is perfect at everything and loves to tease Timothy. When Timothy meets Violet,
he finds a good friend who helps him cope with Claude and others like him.

Wednesday 1/15

Our morning started with writing.  The kids have options during most Writer's Workshops. They can write on paper, Kidblog or Book Creator.  If they finished their small moment book, many kids were interested in starting a fiction book. Why not!
Some of these published books are on the kids blogs.
We have quite the group of writers in our classroom :)

I was lucky to spend Saturday at a workshop with many other Thompson teachers. I'm excited to try some of these ideas in our classroom soon.

Tuesday 1/14

New math app- Top It!
It's just like the game Double Compare we play. The kids loved it!

During Science, the kids researched pond snails.  Ask your child to tell you one of their predators and a way they keep themselves safe.

Monday 1/13

Weekend writing- check out Kidblog and write comments!

Capture a trick word game- practicing first grade sight words.

Researching guppies on this Google site I made. The kids added these pictures and facts into their living/nonliving book.

New tricky glued sounds!

29 minutes of reading during Readers' Workshop today!!!

Friday 1/10

Venn diagram from Science.

Readers Workshop- up to 20 minutes!  We now have separate spots in our classroom that are for independent reading and buddy reading. Some kids said silence really helps them focus. Ask your child if they prefer to read alone or with a buddy.

Writing and drawing our favorite memory of the week.  Leave comments on Kidblog please :)

Thursday 1/9

Our living organisms arrived today!!! Ask your child how we made our aquarium.

Today for Readers' Workshop the kids read for 17 minutes AND they reached their goal of being a bit more quiet!  2 minutes longer than yesterday..Woohoo!

Finally they got to play outside!

Wed. 1/8

We started our morning with Writer's Workshop.  It was a really calm way to start the day.  The children had the option of writing on Book Creator or paper and were writing small moments-mostly about their vacation.

We had our first Reader's Workshop of the year.  The kids read for 15 minutes.  Most children choose to do buddy reading, some read independently.  At the end we had a discussions about the things they thought they did really well on and some goals for tomorrow.... Good-using reading strategies, reading with a friend, figuring out a hard work.  Goals-be a bit more quiet and read for longer!

Math- The kids created a missing addend story problem and had a friend solve it. They finished up any stations from earlier in the week.
Try practicing these tricky problems at home!
Here's an example:  Daisy played with 6 toys in the morning.  She played with some more in the afternoon.  By the end of the day, she played with 11 toys in all.  How many toys did she play with in the afternoon?
6+ ____ = 11 toys
Many children like to use the strategy of counting on... Some use known facts such as 6 + 4 = 10 so one more must be 5.

Ms. Burden led a fun winter globe activity in the afternoon.
We ended our day with a fun read-aloud: There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow!

Tuesday 1/7

Brr!! Hope everyone's staying warm!
We met virtually today in a chat room! On Today's Meet, the kids shared ways they thought plants and animals are alike and different. I will try to get the transcript on here...
In Fundations, the kids are continuing to work on singular and plural words- so far we have practiced adding an s to mean more than one.
We also did a sneak peak of a unit from later in the year- long vowels- adding a silent e at the end of a word to make the vowel say its name.
During Math stations, the kids worked on more than, less than, and equal to.
Looking through an organism magazine:

Monday 1/6

Welcome back!! I was so glad to see my kiddos today!

The Kidblog goal was to write at least 8 sentences... I'm amazed (especially after such a long break) that so many kids wanted to keep writing and writing!!

Our next science unit is all about living and nonliving things.   We spent the day preparing for our live organisms that will be delivered soon!!

After watching, Make Me Genius we learned:

The kids worked together to make lists on posters of things they think are living/nonliving.  They definitely had some interesting debates around quite a few items including the sun and seeds.

This afternoon, the kids worked through different centers all on this topic:
-scanning a QR code and watching this video
-sorting pictures
-starting their living/nonliving book on Book Creator!  Taking a picture of something in our classroom and writing why it is/isn't living

Hope everyone gets a good nights rest... I know I'm tired! :)

Happy New Year!
I hope you all had time to spend with your family over winter break.
I had both an exciting and relaxing vacation in Aruba with my family.
Two adventures I'm definitely going to share with the kids next week :)

With the two extra days at home, I'll be making a December iMovie (finally!) and sending it out.. Keep an eye out for it!

Happy snow days!
